Audiobooks can make the morning commute go faster or make you run just a little bit longer, but sometimes it’s nice to curl up and listen right where you are. We asked a couple of our staff members to share photos of their surroundings while they listened to some great stories. Let their recommendations inspire you to stop, listen, and take in the view.
Emily Parliman:
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng was getting so many great reviews before it came out in September. It seemed like everyone I know was reading it over the fall. I recently spent a weekend upstate with a few friends, and we all talked about how much we enjoyed the novel on the car ride to the cabin. I mainly listened to the audiobook on my couch, with my plants in view.
Little Fires Everywhere is a layered story about the motivations behind the decisions we make, particularly when it comes to trying to protect those we love. The novel has a mystery/thriller element, but I got so swept up in the interpersonal drama that I almost forgot about the fire that the first chapter teases until the very end. The novel rotates between different viewpoints across two families. Jennifer Lim expertly narrates all of the perspectives, keeping the characters distinct, and expressing their reactions to events in nuanced ways.
Nicole Morano:
This is my view while listening to The Princess Diarist.
Julie Wilson:
Listening to The Grave’s a Fine and Private Place by Alan Bradley.
Vicki Tomao:
This is my view when I’m listening to Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult.

I have a little oasis in the city with this view. I just finished listening to There There by Tommy Orange which comes out in June. Not only is his prose great (and an enlightening look into the Native American urban community), but the cast of narrators is amazing. I highly recommend it.
